La Galleria delghi Uffizi and the search for Titian's "Venus"

While most of the house was in Pisa yesterday, one of our roommates was standing in a long line outside of the Uffizi Gallery. In the few hours that she was there she had only moved up in line about a foot and a half, so she gave up and resolved that she would come back on Sunday morning--and I happily volunteered to go with her!

The gallery opened at 8:15. We got in line around 7:45 and finally got in at 9:15. It was not too overwhelming of a wait, but it beat waiting until the middle of the week for a reservation at a premium price.

Like everything else in Italy, the galleries seemed mythical and we weaved in and out of the salas (rooms) and admired the multitudes of works and the wide decoration of the ceilings. Grandma--you'd be happy to know I only came across one sala of Tintoretto's! I got to see some Raphaels, Botticellis (The Birth of Venus, Primavera and The Annunciation), a Michelangelo (the The Doni Tondo), Giottos, Lippis, Leonardos, Durers and Caravaggios (The Medusa, Sacrifice of Isaac and The Bacchus). I was a little disappointed that their Caravaggios seemed to be more of an afterthought as they were placed far away from the other galleries and right at the exit. Most of their notes said that they were discovered in the museums archives in the early 1900s. Some not so famous "pleasures" that I fount there were The Portinari Altarpiece by Hugo van der Goes, Rogier van der Weyden's Entombment and Artemesia Gentileschi's Judith Slaying Holofernes.

When my roommate and I were coming to the end of the galleries we found ourselves searching for Titian's "Venus of Urbino" and had to resort to our guidebooks to discover the sala to which it belonged. We retraced our steps through the Michelangelo and Leonardo rooms and wondered how we could have missed the Titian. When we arrived in the room we saw a big empty glass enclosure with a sign saying that the painting would be in Tokyo on display until May 18th--today! We both hope that it will be back in the Uffizi when we visit the gallery with classmates toward the beginning of June.
